Adopt a Horse
Adoption into a permanent home is the ultimate goal for the rehab horses at A Little Bit of Heaven. With the exception of our permanent residents, most of our horses are available for adoption at any time.
If you are considering adopting one of our horses, you should understand that it is a long-term responsibility; the average horse's lifespan is between 25 to 30 years. If you feel you are ready for this type of commitment, read the guidelines below.
Adoption Qualifications
If you believe you meet the following basic qualifications, please contact us for further details!
- All applicants must be over 18 years of age.
- Veterinarian, farrier, and personal references are required.
- Our horses are placed in homes where they will have at least one other equine companion; they are herd animals and need to be able to socialize.
- You are able to provide food, water, shelter, and kind treatment to the horse. You will have the horse vaccinated and examined by a veterinarian yearly. You will not allow the horse to be used for any experimentation or vivisection.
- We do site checks prior to the horse leaving our premises and after they have been re-homed. Follow-up site checks will continue throughout the life of the animal.
- You agree to provide current photos and status reports on the adopted horse semi-annually, in addition to the annual veterinary update noting that the horse has received proper care and nutrition. (We will obtain the veterinary update directly from the adopter's attending veterinarian.) Failure to provide these updates will constitute breach of adoption terms and A Little Bit of Heaven may void the Bill of Sale Adoption Agreement if we deem the horse to be at-risk.
- If terms are unmet and the horse's health deteriorates at any time, A Little Bit of Heaven, Inc. has the right to remove the animal back into our care.
- If, for any reason, you are unable to keep the horse, you will immediately notify LBH staff, and we reserve the right to determine whether the horse may be re-homed or must be returned to our care.
- There is a non-refundable $25 adoption application fee. The application will be good for one year in the event the applicant should want to adopt additional horses, and there will not be an additional application fee until the application is expired.
- All applications will go before the Board of Directors for final approval.
- Adoption fees are held for one week. If the horse is not returned to A Little Bit of Heaven within 7 days of leaving our facility, the adoption fee will not be refunded.
